Friends of the Hostel

The Gore High School Hostel was opened in 1923 as the first state co-educational school hostel in New Zealand.

The gracious style of the buildings, with their modern upgrades sit in a park-like setting with great specimen trees next door to the school, and allow full use of facilities for boarders.

The five day boarding, home away from home environment develops teenagers' independence, yet encourages a good mix of weekend family time with an organised school week.

The Hostel operates under the governance of the Gore High School Board of Trustees through a Hostel Committee comprising the Rector, Hostel Managers, BoT Parent and "Friends of the Hostel" representatives. Hostels are not funded by the Ministry of Education and have to be self-supporting financially through boarding fees. Parents can apply via the school for Government Boarding Bursaries which are direct-credited off their school accounts.

Gore High School Hostel has been fortunate to have a group called "Friends of the Hostel" which all parents are encouraged to join, and who meet once a term with the Hostel Managers, to encourage, support and discuss boarding issues and to raise funds for student amenities. The current committee is:

Chairperson: Heather Johnstone 03-415 7272
Secretary/Treasurer: Ken Blatch 03-202 5683
Committee: Ross McKee 03- 207 5709 John Wilson 03-201 6424
Ann Crawford 03-207 6855 Robyn Crooks 03-202 7785
Ross Mitchell 03-415 7687
plus Head Students Nicole White Phil Wilson

The Gore High School Hostel provides a great opportunity toattend an excellent school, without long daily bus travel and expensive city weekends; to enjoy your teenagers with their sport and cultural activities closer to home and supported in your own community.
