The Junior School  - Years 9 and 10

All junior students are required to study a core of subjects, designed to give a broad balanced education to meet
the requirements of the National Curriculum.

The major aims in the junior school are to:

  • Provide students with a sound grounding in the core subjects

  • Equip students with a strong foundation in the learning of attitude and skills

  • Give students the opportunity to explore a wide range of other subject areas

The core will include: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education and Health. In Years 9 and 10, class
placements are mostly in broad banded classes which are based on students’ Numeracy and Literacy abilities. Accelerate
classes in Years 9 and 10 are based on academic results.

NCEA Assessment procedures - Student information 2020

Students in Years 11, 12 and 13 study towards the external qualifications with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) at NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3 as well as Scholarship. Gore High School is fully accredited to award credits in all conventional subjects and we have a very wide ranging accreditation to teach and assess vocational units. 

The major aims in the senior school are to:

  • Provide students a qualification in the subjects they are studying for

  • Equip students for the transition to the post-school world of employment or further education

  • Provide each student with a relevant course of study that matches the individuals’ strengths and abilities

The junior subjects continue on to NCEA Level 1 qualification in Year 11. Social Studies in the junior school provides the
foundation for NCEA Level 1 in History, Geography and Economics.

Students in Years 12 and 13 are offered a very wide choice of subjects, taught by specialist teachers. This is a definite of a
larger secondary school.

Class placement in Years 11 to 13 is largely based on each student’s choice of option subjects which are selected from a
wide range of courses offered. Minimum entry requirements exist for Years 12 and 13 subjects. 

All Year 11 subjects continue on into the senior school, with Science splitting into Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
Accounting is available as a year long course at all levels. In the senior school, students work towards NCEA qualifications
at a variety of levels.

Distance Learning, Gateway, and a Tertiary High School programme enable students to gain part of their qualification
in the workplace.
