Outdoor Education
Education Outside The Classroom
Numerous subject field trips and camps are held during the year in order to meet curriculum objectives. For instance, Year 13 Geography students attend a three day camp in Queenstown, staying at the Lakeland Camp at Kelvin Heights. A number of Biology trips are organised to different venues around Southland. Tourism students attend a two day camp in the Dunedin area. Our Agriculture students are involved in many experiences outside the classroom.
Year 12 Physical Education students attend a kayaking camp in Fiordland during Term 1 and in Term 3 go cross-country skiing in the Cardrona Valley.
The Adventure Leadership Programme for Years 12 and 13 offers a range of outdoor experiences. Students attend four camps; rafting, tramping, snow and rock climbing.
Each Year 10 student has the opportunity to attend a camp. In the past this has been at Borland Lodge, though more recently we have used Glendhu Bay, on the shores of Lake Wanaka.
The three day experience encourages the students to cooperate in a group situation and to participate in mental physical challenges through activities such as caving, kayaking, climbing, rafting, orienteering, confidence course challenges, initiative activities and bush navigation. We are fortunate to have parents each year who are willing to assist with these camps.
